Collecting coral is illegal round these parts
Half of the coral I've bought from the bargain bins from all the lfs around Brisbane
I've never paid.more than $ 20 for a bit of coral.
I actual got some frags today for $2 each and after 6 jours in the tank they were already looking better.
Just pays to be patient and don't be afraid to haggle.

The other half are donations or trades from friends and club members.
same goes for the fish. The only thing in there that costs more than $50 is the yellow tang. And even that was a gift.

just an update and a winge

Post  Makaira on 22nd November 2012, 5:18 am

hey guys

so on the upside. nothing has died.

i now have permission to hang the lights from the ceiling above the tank so the rig i drew in the earlier post will not be needed.
ive finished the hanging fixture just need to drill holes etc.

i am have been dosing vodka for about 2-3weeks now.
it seemed to be working however, im getting this gut feeling that its just not cricket.

so im designing a two 11 L tub tier above the sump. top teir to have rollers and grit bottom tier to have racemosa and rollers .
and the the small fuge i have will have cheato.

the top tier is feed by a T off the return pump that goes to the chiller the the output of the chiller will go the top tier.
the into the bottom tier, and finally return just before the fuge. it will create a filtration loop. scratch it think...

i will be running leds over each section. im thinking just a white and red mix should do.

my 5000L/h wavemaker died last week so ive lost alot of flow in the tank.
if anyone knows of one sitting around ill be happy to take it off your hands.
trying to find a suitable one for the right price is hard.

i really would love your input guys on the sump design. as in the order of the tiers etc.

nitrates and po4 are creeping up again so need to get this sorted

the return is already split and that side of things works fine
however if i need to i can put a seperate pump for the chiller/tiers in the first section of the sump

i thought so to up until saturday night.
igno and liquidg may be able to explain it better.
but from what i understand.
its the prefilter is for food fish waste and other detris.
and the settlefilter is for redundancy against more finer things like metals, and

all in all it just adds more of a barrier against fine particles.
the last thing you want is any large particles of anything in the main section of the sump.
as it will just build up and contribute to the nitro cycle/bio load.

again this is just my interpretation of the bucket load of info i got the other night

If you can create a system like that it will be awesome...covering all the cycle and offering low maintenance longevity.

Your understanding is accurate .....except the heavy metals thing but let's not get overly complicated until needed ah -

The main consideration I would highlight is ensuring your pre filters will be easy to access, in turn making them easy to change without to much dripping mess....just think about where you physically locate them....they are the only hassle long term and need to be easily accessed if possible.

Otherwise you will see a notable change for the better in a short period of time....your tank looks great and is working fine - it will just get better if you can build on it the way your thinking.... cheers

Great stuff, I look forward to your successful progress.... What a Face

Keep the pics coming ah

Cool

Yer that's the bonus on a revised sump, more room for stuff......a holding tank sounds good

Nah G mans got us paranoid. Were trying to conceal our identities to avoid persecution by the wider reefing community.

Mate the reefing community has many issues and always has, I even joined in on the conning back in the day by making the old crappy trickle filters for shops.
I knew they didnít work with out proper pre filtering, but the flawed design was what they wanted so thatís what I built for them as well, not for my hobby though.

The most important things about all this is that money and egos runs the hobbyists and the internet and it is held onto like a crazy religious cult.

Shops run most of the hobbyistís forum sites and money making from hobbyists and egos dictate what is done and said there.

Not all though, the best are, a part from us here in Q,there is also Queensland aquarium forum and reefcentral in the states, there are many others but it goes down hill from there to you know where.

We catch our own and understand the ocean a bit from this, most donít and are fed rubbish and believe it!

Actually now you mention it I did actually think how awesome the shots were - and even better if they are from a phone camera - excellent mate, they really are great shots!!
Keep them coming - loving that tank and the progress - how is the sump build progressing?
