Pink egg crate????,lol.
I never trust coloured plastics, but it is most likely fine?

Seriously though, the settling pre filters pvc pipe sections that should be perforated are not large enough in diameter, try to make them nearly the size the area they are in, just leaving room to detach from the exit pipes.

To make them fit over a much smaller pipe just make sleaves or heat the large pipe and squeeze down to be tight on the smaller one while heated then cool in place,

With the larger fitting over the smaller you only need 4 mill to sit the pre filter pipe over the set in pipe portion.

If the settling pre filters donít work properly, this type of filtration will malfunction in 6 months to 2 years on average,(thatís happened to me many times until I made what worked),you will loose much of the anaerobic bio community with in any where once the porus part loses bacteria that would exist there to oxidise nitrate.

The last chamber for your return pump will need the water level watched carefully, that is where your level will show and evaporation of 2 to 4 litres a day in some systems will empty that area in less then a day and the pump will put micro bubbles in your tank then.

You will need an auto top up, that you can make your self or buy one, thatís up to you.

A part from those issues mate, its looking good.

Now that is one awesome job - great stuff mate very well done.

You will be rewarded with some awesome water and I am sure we can get some nice stock once you get it going. Love your work man, just awesome - very proud of ya mate, that's what good planning and hard work looks like - you are the perfectionist aren't you cheers

That sloping floor is a bugger- just check the level again once under load, maybe chock the elevated end with a piece of timber to ensure the rubber feet cannot compress over time.....looks great mate, keep the pics and progress updates coming Very Happy

Cool

Thanks Ignobolis. The pipes seem to be okay G when I ran water through. its the filter wall that I'm more concerned about since it has less surface area than the pipes. Mind you both may become an issue once they build up with some waste on them. like you say the pipes are an easy fix but having to make a wider filter wall means totally redoing the first two sections. 😞 As for the "pink" (RED) "egg crate I did some research on exactly what is in it and talked to a few people and I think it should be alright. this one isnt uv resistant treated but I must say if/ when something goes wrong I'm sure I'll wonder if it has anything to do with it.

No mate I donít mean that, not the top parts, the circumference of your pipes, the width of them, the parts with holes or cuts in them, you know the down ward parts, they can be made much bigger and that will slow the blocking process of the Dacron.

If you have to, heat the tops and bend them away from each other to allow them to be made bigger, you only need a couple of mill between each pipe covered with Dacron and the glass for it to filter out rubbish.

If the first pre filter is doing its job then the pipes should go a week with out cleaning that Dacron.

With plastic the easiest way to see if it will be an issue is wash it with just neutralized tap water and dry it, leave it in the sun for a half hour and then smell it, if there is any smell, that smell will go into your waters, salt water breaks down everything eventually.

The plastic, not that bad or bad, I donít know.

Thatís how I was told to test plastics by a plastic specialist back when plastics were worked on and sold in the fortitude valley.

If it has colour, check it out, if it is soft and has colour, donít trust it in any way or if it has any scent donít trust it in any way!

If your first pre filter is an issue, silicon one slide in the corner and the other just next to the first settling pre filter, that will double the size of your first pre filter.

That one doesnít have to be on a ninety degree out from the glass, it can be on a forty five degree or any degree that fits and makes as much area as possible to filter out rubbish so it wonít block quickly.

Yeh I got that, as in it's not the inside circumference of the pipe but the surface area of the outside of the pipe that the Dacron goes on. Good idea for the filter wall saves having to take out a wall and take up space in another section. I wouldn't have thought of doing it that way. I'll update this thread once everything is complete. I wont be able to work on it for another week and half.

No I donít mean that either, your pipes that the dacron is wrapped around are to small for that sized area, they need to be replaced with wider-bigger sections of pvc pipes and then cut or drilled again.

Near on fill the area they are in!

Nice mate!
Though I would get rid of that substrate,I can see potential hydrogen sulphide signs already.
Hey did you get any of those incredable wave makers the guys got from china for $90,if I had a bigger tank they would be brilliant.

Cheers Guys. Unfortunately I don't have my priorities straight G, I'd never part with the substrate despite the potential issues. Any other way to combat it ie life forms that turn it over to avoid hydrogen sulfide developing?

They say there is but there isn't really, for affective cleaning that is, for life to do this is in an aquarium is just a myth.
What lives in your substrate and increases over time eats the organic matter, sure! But you see their waste is organic matter so the idea of critters adequately cleaning a substrate is a fantasy!
Its similar to what worms do on land in the soil, they take that organic matter closer to the nitrite cycle as it comes out their butt, it's still organic matter!
Syphon it thoroughly once a week mate and it will be as good as it can be.
