New and foreigner

Post  carmelof on 14th January 2016, 10:31 am

Hi everybody,
I'm Carmelo. I'm Italian (but I've been spending the last few years in Germany).
I've moved to Australia (Brisbane) last fall and I'm settling down...
Settling down, in my book, normally means having aquariums so, among other tanks, I'm in the process of setting up a coral tank.
In the meantime, I have also started trying places for snorkeling as it's quite attractive to me to see the animals I've been keeping in tanks finally in their natural environment.
Considered the above, registering to this forum sounded like a logical thing to do...
Cheers,
Carmelo

Hope to see some pics or some information or questions on what ever from you.

Sure, in my snorkeling trips I try and make some pictures but they're nowhere as beautiful as the ones you guys do.
I also try and make some short videos. I have mounted a couple in the past (from snorkeling in Sicily) and put on Youtube ([You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]) but it really takes a long time so I'm not sure when I will do more.
So far I've been snorkeling in Tangalooma, another place in the Sunshine Coast. Planning to go to the Gold Coast seaway over the weekend, let's see if the visibility is good enough (checked on things you gave advice on).
Cheers,
Carmelo

The south port sea way vis is dependant on size of swell, on the size of the tide and which way the wind has been blowing! I will pm you a number to call to get info on conditions.
The south coast maybe not the best place to go at this stage, we are going north.
Hope it goes well for you.

Well, I was thinking of going "a bit" north but I thought because of the wind direction, water from the Moreton Bay might go and make the waters a bit murky (planning to go on Sunday)...at least, that's my understanding from reading (I'm quite new to the area so I might misread stuff)...

Oh okay, Sunday will be better then Saturday going south, we are going north tomorrow.
Hope fully that swell will not interfere by lifting silt out off the sea way.

Oh, not so well...We went anyway, despite high chances of murky water. Indeed, the vis was very bad and we just went to Surfers' Paradise to spend a bit of time on the beach...it will be for next time, I guess...
Next weekend we might try Caloundra and/or Noosa...

Cool, if the swell stays low you could try the spot featured in this thread after these words at the boat ramp on Caloundra point, its a reasonable small low tide this weekend, for low tides in general.
You get to the end of the ramp at waters edge and look out and at the end of the reef on the left is a large pool, if the swell isn't getting in there and vis is reasonable , that's nice safe spot and plenty of invert and fish life in there and all around out off the ramp on a good day.
When there is near no swell and north winds for ages to clear it up, it's good all around there.
Saturday, though possibly may have a bit of swell on, at its best roughly between 2.00 and 3.00 pm and on Sunday with maybe less swell from 2.30 to 3.30pm.
Just be aware it is all in the Moreton bay marine park!

Or there is Mooloolaba channel next to La Balsa Park Harbour Parade Buddina, to the left at the toilets just at the waters rock wall edge at the park is coffee rock reef from the red marker inwards or to the right is a bolder/rock formation under water to the right of the stairs going into the water, both areas are okay, if vis is alright.
Saturday you could get in around 1.30ish pm and Sunday around 2.00ish pm.

Or at Maroochydore at cotton tree along cotton tree parade and the esplanade, just head to the river, along there you find a man made wall or two, pylons along the edge, the creek entrance and structures in the channel and so on to look at on Saturday leading up to around 9am ish and on Sunday around 10am ish, it can be good in there with a large tide to clear it up and there will be a large one this weekend, good vis, who knows, lol.
Noosa may be a bit not so good with these winds and supposed swell size for Saturday in particular, but you never know!

Yesterday we went to Maroochydore. Vis wasn't that great (not the best situation for pictures, as you can see), still had fun observing stuff in the shallow water.
The swell on the ocean side was a bit too high so, after Maroochydore, we just walked at some pool in Caloundra.
Managed to have fun anyway, after all! Thanks again for the suggestions!

No worries mate, still nice pics you took cheers
I hit Caloundra at dawn Saturday for pics of sunrise then went in for a surf at the boat ramp. it was a good size, 3 to 7 feet, once you got off the boat ramp and out the back, lol.

Yeh it was really good, but I only lasted an hour, getting a bit old now and I did nothing in the week before to fit up for it!
