The coast was at its best today and a couple of us were there to enjoy it.

The weather was great, the water was warm and clear, well 8 to 12 metres vis anyway but that’s not bad and it got to 15 metres by the end.

The aquarium life was in small numbers which was no worries as there wasn’t anything overly wanted; just a couple of things for a mate’s tank and just a swim really was the go for today.

These are some pics of the trip.

As you can see the water was quite nice.

This crab seemed so relaxed.

But than it decided to show the size of the last diver it clawed,he was this big.

Sorry guys it’s not our clubs practise or this forum to give out spots, not for just us but for the over all protection of areas where others that may go to and do the wrong thing and attract undue attention and basically ruin it for us and some others that use appropriate collecting methods and keep the areas we frequent sustainable.

The camera that was used for the collected species and not for underwater use is just a basic $99 Olympic camera and the underwater pics that rarely turn out is with a very cheap $59 no brand snorkelling camera.

Ianqld and Our club president are the photographers but they were not there for this one and the result is very few good pics out of the 60 plus taken.

The next two trips one or both of the guys are going to be there and than there is the best chance of some good pics, they actually have the proper gear and know how to use it.
Very Happy

They are Leadrites cyrtorhynchus,a type of cleaner shrimp.
These are the hardest workers if they feel safe in the aquarium you will ever find in relation to working on not just removing damaged tissue and non toxic parasites like cleaner wrasse do but to actually remove the white spot blisters on maturity and take care of all types of parasites on the fish.
We find them normally living in conjunction with an eel that they look after and gives them protection as with most cleaner shrimp even though they are slightly toxic for fish to eat any way.
They will swim into the water column and begin work on anything that moves, including your hand.
Of the millions it seems at times of life forms out there these are very special to me for many reasons and a little rare, sought of as they are found in certain areas mainly.
They are so easy to catch that you do not need a net as well, when you find them.

Kirra reef is where I first caught a couple of these brilliant shrimps, sadly that is no more and is covered and all life is dead there now on the reef under the sand that was very beautiful in its day.

We used to swim from shore the half mile to the far left section, the best part and see most Coris wrasse, latezonatus clown fish, anthias, imperator and semicircle and six bar angelfish and corals and sponges and anemones and far more and the NSW government covered it and killed it all.

The sand pumping jetty just south of the tweed river covered it and turned snapper to greenmount in to what’s now called the super bank (surfing term) and ruined the kirra break as well.

The net is accessible by any one and not all act responsibly with the marine habitat and insure that it is used in a sustainable way.

So many times we go some where and there are rocks turned over and not replaced from where it was, killing most that live underneath and removing the cover that the rock offered for the creature that was captured which is one of the dumbest things they can do and cancel out sustainability.

In some spots we know well i will go in on tank very regularly just to set up structures with available rocks as such that have been laid flat with no cover under it and offer little free flow of current in certain ways to provide oxygen and food for what ever may make its home there so that new life forms may find cover to start life for us or other responsible collectors to catch them when on club free diving trips and just general habitat reforming from the destruction the simple minded have caused.

Personally i will not give out information on spots to any one other than people I know well or that are local members of the aandtsociety, sorry.

cheers

Thankyou for that information liquidg might have to get one for our tank when we get it up and running . .
understand totally about keeping quiet on your dive sites certainly would not be giving any of ours out either . have one already where we saw clowns ! stoked to see them so close to shore we have our sources also on good pinpoints up and down the coast now anyhows and have had a few nice dives in May.
we will be joining aandt society soon waiitng for rosters to be organized !
it seems you guys dive mostly Weekend by the looks ? how many members do you have in your club ? does it matter on age ?

Sounds like Kirra would have been a very special dive . do you have any past photos of this ? would be great to see them if you do. surely the QLD and NSW Government were in consult with the dive stores and marine parks before they made such a controversal and devestating decission . Did the people not have a voice at the time ?
yes the net is a great rescource to get information i agree with you , but it also also can bring some people out of the woodwork that would most likely not fit into society .
Good to hear you are mindful on your dives to be turning rocks back that people have not replaced in their idiotic behaviour .we have seen this also mostly North .so far.
Do you ever see the fisheries on your dives . saw them a few weeks back near the bridge in southoport. not sure if they were checking out the pelicans or waitng for a suspect lol

We know 2 people only from this site and make contact mostly by text phone with each other ! . went for a dive last month with them. lots of nice marine life to see. and will post some photos when we can work out how. In anycase we would contact you on the forum if we needed advice as you have encouraged us to do happily in your past posts especially when setting up our tank or wait for a fellow reefer to respond to our topic as the forum is used for!
hope the weather turns out ok for the weekend and you all have a good dive on the 5th
cheers

The aandtsociety members ages are from 20 the youngest to 68 the oldest.
Mostly the same people go on the collecting trips with slight variations most times.
One good thing about the club is that there are no sites we do not know about from many years of many different divers adding to the combined knowledge pool.
It makes it easier when we can decide what we want and go to the spots where they are and at the time when they are at the size that they show them selves for the first time after their time in the plankton.
We see marine parks, water police and fisheries lots of times and we rarely do anything overly wrong any way so we are no drama to them.
We used to have a fisheries patrol officer that is high ranking now come down to where we were for a yak on many occasions over several years and we used to get them some fish for the office tank as well.
They are after the idiots and so they should be because they bring a grey cloud over all of us with the stupid things they do.
That’s the way to go for tank info to post questions on the marine’s forum, I am sure there will be heaps that can offer some advice.
We are not a big club, used to be the biggest and first in Aus but times change and now we are on the net it may make things a little better and it is.
If you went out with ken diving, did you see the thread on Kens dives and fishing in the scuba diving---------section.

thankyou for sharing the pics and thread. on ken, looks like good times were had by all .
definitley a good age group in your club by the sounds , and alot of wisdom in there for sure , hopefully in time we can also add to that poole . Smile

i am sure we will gain alot more knowledge and feel more comfortable in topics as we also start up a tank and collecting our own fish . must be very rewarding watching your own catch from the lounge .
you would all be feeling at ease knowing you have met the fisheries officers , at least they know what you guys are about !

we were only talking about this the other day and wondering how they would react to your club trips should they see you collecting . i am thinking it may be a good idea to introduce ourselves to them also . if we see them again .

we missed going to stadbroke island in May but had a great time on the coast recently and will be diving again with with our friend in July so we will hopefully get to meet ken then !
by what has been spoken about him to us , he sounds very friendly and happy for people to join in on activities that he may have planned if there is room available.
we are looking at either camping or staying with him to make a weekend of it as it saves chasing a ferry home . cheers

did you check out that water spout on the news that hit lennox head . ?
we have seen a few small ones in the past , how scarey that must have been for all in that village.
