You guys might have some words of advice?
My mates dive gear has a quite a lot of corrosion on it.
What’s the best way to deal with this?
Thank you in advance. Very Happy

Once we get his gear all good we are going for a dive.

Hey able2.

Firstly the scuba dive equipment, if it is corroded you need to use undiluted vinegar, apple cider vinegar is best for this.

You sit your metal parts in the vinegar for a few hours, or what ever does the job, just lift it out every couple of hours to check on it, do not leave it in the vinegar over night, it may take all the chrome or what ever coating off the regs.

Try to remove all silicon or rubber parts for this, but if in the vinegar for a short time it should be okay.

Once the acidic quality of the vinegar has removed the corrosion or rust, than rinse the gear in slightly warm, never hot water, with a little dish washing liquid in it.

Than rinse under tap and than a soak in slightly warm water with fabric softener to keep away corrosion from than on.

Do this with every bit of your gear that goes into the water, wet suits, fin straps, dive bag zips, still sealed camera casing, everything!

All your gear will last sought of forever if you do this after each trip.

When you do anything to regs or inflator valve and buttons, use some silicon lub spray to the metal.

Your tank valve and regs should be serviced once a year at least!

With your tank valve (only) after a rinse off after the dives, hold your thumb over the air exit,(do not spray that hole) and spray it all and if a stealy, spray the areas of rust with RP7 or similar as well, and in the burst disk hole as well, wipe it off and there will never be corrosion on it and the function and disk will last for ages with no worries.

When I did my FAUI course in 1970, it was part of the full weeks course to have to do a full service on regs and valves, the advanced padi course in the 80s was totally different, so I have always serviced my own gear since, but I can’t advise you how to do this, that is illegal!

A couple of years back I was off work for a time and to stop from getting board I put together a Q dive site page for the club.

It has every site from Noosa to the tweed on it; I hope it helps you out.

Oh by the way, it would be a safe thing to do a simple dive to get the feel of scuba again before you go out any deeper than 40 or 50 feet, you know how it distorts perception and how the brain functions from there down in particular, try one in the tweed river trendy spot, its a safe one.

One of the most experienced divers I would recommend that takes out dive charters is Ken, he takes divers or spear fishing groups to frazer Island sometimes, but knows Stradbroke island like no one else and that’s where he takes most divers to normally.

Good diving mate,stay safe cheers
