Pink Dolphin in Calcasieu Lake
That's a photo that appeared in the Telegraph on March 9, 2009. They correctly identified it as being found in Calcasieu Lake but they incorrectly stated that Louisiana is in the southwestern USA. Good grief! This is not the Southwest!
That's a photo that appeared on FOX News.com on July 3, 2007, when Pinky was probably no more than about nine months old. That's one of a series of photos taken on June 24, 2007 by a charter boat captain on Calcasieu Lake.
Finally, someone got Pinky the dolphin on video: here. That should put to rest all the doubts about whether the previous photos had been photoshopped and whether all the people who had reported seeing it were drunk at the time.
In that NBC News piece, Lester Holt incorrectly states that Pinky was spotted "off the coast of Louisiana." Calcasieu Lake is not off the coast of Louisiana.
Calcasieu Lake is almost completely land-locked. It's a brackish lake with an average salinity of 12 ppt. It's just north of Cameron, Louisiana. (Enter Cameron, LA in the Google Map search and you will find it.) Louisiana is on the Gulf of Mexico, just east of Texas. We do not consider ourselves to be in the "southwestern USA" and Calcasieu Lake is not "off the coast of Louisiana," it's inland by several miles.
