Algae importer of nutrients carries on with out pigments.

The racemosa I use has some weird habits, the main one being an amazing nutrient importer, but this one is that it lives on and flourishes after it drops its colour/pigments.
This means it should starve to death I would think, they need pigments in general and the cyano with in its chloroplast to carry out photosynthesis?
How the hell this algae lives and grows like this is beyond me!
