Hey Scott you were a little led astray as to what a dwarf lion fish was last night at the meeting by the internet crap that is abundant.
These pics are from our poisonous fish section of the reference area of our forum.
These have been caught by us in the past.
The internet is an amazing resource, the problem is you have to know what you are looking for to look through the crap, that consists of others info copied from others that never really knew that info any way in the first place.
This is a dwarf and the zebra you have are both relatively common, the zebra is extremely common and the dwarf is a bit shyer.
They grow to a max of around 7 inches, we used to target them for orders when I worked commercially at aquarium life collecting.
The zebra,as in the biggest we found would have been around 10 inches and no where near as shy.
Mate even the eighty percent of the net that pointed to what the dwarf lion was, is crap.
These pics wont be there for long I have to work on them a resize for our reference section.
Both of these can vary from grey-brown or red, depending on how they feel or where they are.
Dendrochirus zebra or zebra lionfish.
Dendrochirus brachypterus or dwarf lion.
Some call the lunula-Russells lion fish that’s wrong as well, the lunula was its name a very long time ago, before the label Russells.
This the pterois lunula, some say is a volitan, they are wrong!!
The lack of large horns and the more brown that black give it away compared to the volitans.
