Loss of fish from a burnt out pump
I had a pump burn out in the water of my broodstock system last night. The burning plastic seems to have released toxins into the water and the rock and water smell like burning pvc.
I moved most of the fish to the spare breeder box system within about 5 minutes, but have lost at least one breeding pair of fish (the male is gone and the female is looking very weak).
I guess I'm lucky I have spare systems to put fish into when this kind of thing happens, but I haven't lost a fish in years... I'm devastated.

Its allways the way isn't it,the things we don't really and can't overly plan for, happen.
If it's not a leak,or a device malfunction,it's something else hey.
I had a system and tank running for ten years and three of the fish in there were from the begining of that ten years.
There was some rust forming on the hinges so i thought i would lube the hinges on the hood with silicon spray that is used on the scuba gear.
Some of the spray that i thought would be harmless landed on the water and with in a short time the ph crashed to such a state that the fishes fins were disolving right before me,out of the 20 plus fish in there three survived and one of those was a samatra premnis, its flesh was completely burnt off all of its fins and tail, just bones poking out,in three months after that it looked like a perfect example of that type of fish.
The stories of these types of tank crashes happening out there must be amazing.
I hope everything else does well for you.

How much does rusting affect the water of a big system? I've got a cheap $15 light that clips onto the glass in my sump, and the stalk part is painted steel and its rusting, i am yet to notice any difference.. have been meaning to swap it with my other one though.
